Conserve
In light of the global warming crisis, energy efficiency and conservation must be seen as Christian values. To love our neighbors and follow the teachings of Christ, Christians must make Christ-like energy choices and lead energy-efficient lives. Every decision to use energy more efficiently—no matter how big or small—is a decision to show mercy on another human being, just as God shows mercy on each of us.

The following is an overview of how Americans use energy and opportunities for us to become more energy efficient:
At Home
About 25% of energy consumed in the United States is used to power our homes. We consume energy to provide light, to refrigerate food, to watch television, and to keep the temperature just right. In short, we use energy to provide all the comforts of modern American life.
Making Christ-like energy choices should begin in the home with the family. Energy-efficiency experts believe Americans can reduce the consumption of energy in their homes by 75% without drastically altering their lifestyles. Making Christ-like energy choices also makes sound financial sense. The average American family’s direct and indirect energy costs top $10,000 each year. For the average American family, reducing energy consumption by 30% means saving $3,000 every year. That’s $30,000 over ten years—about the cost of a new car or four years of tuition at many state universities.
On the Road
Transportation accounts for about 25% of the energy Americans consume—the majority from driving our cars. Most Americans emit as much greenhouse gas through their cars as through their homes—although they only use their cars a few hours a day.
As Americans, we have a love affair with our cars. Too often, we don’t even think about walking, riding a bike, or using public transportation. Although driving an energy-efficient vehicle is an obvious way to reduce your emissions, there are many additional opportunities for increased efficiency with the car you own. Keeping your car properly tuned can make it 20% more efficient. Obeying speed limits and not speeding up and breaking can increase efficiency by an additional 10%.
At the Store
About half of the energy consumed in America fuels our industrial and commercial sectors. Each time we make a purchase, we are personally responsible for the energy consumed to manufacture, package, deliver, use, and dispose of that product.
When spending your money, you have many choices. You have the power to make Christ-like purchasing decisions. You can make thoughtful choices to lower your greenhouse gas emissions by purchasing reusable items instead of disposable items.
Each time you enter a store, say a prayer asking God to guide your choices. Remember that each Christ-like purchasing decision you make is a blessing on someone else.
