A Christian Response
When asked which was the most important commandment, Jesus replied: “Thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself.” Matthew 22:37-39.
Global warming is real. It will have dire affects on the world’s most vulnerable people. We Christians must choose how to react to this humanitarian crisis.
We can fulfill of Christ’s commandment to love our neighbors by affirmatively choosing to take action against the causes and effects of climate change. Or, we can continue to break Christ’s commandment, ignore the problem we created, and cause millions to suffer.
What would Jesus do?
What would Jesus do when presented with the choice of helping those in need or causing and ignoring their suffering? What does Jesus teach us to do?
Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. 1 John 2:6.
Faced with the crisis of global warming, we should follow Christ’s teaching to treat the least among us as we would treat Christ. We should fight the causes of global warming while we comfort those who are being affected. By doing this, we glorify His name.
Then the righteous will answer Him, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?”
The King will reply, “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:37-40
